When do nurse residency applications open?

Every hospital sets its own rounds, and most are short: half of the 33 rounds we confirmed this cycle were open 10 days or less. How the timing works and how not to miss one.

There is no national application season for nurse residencies. Each hospital hires new graduates in cohorts and opens a round of applications for each cohort, usually a few months before it starts. Many hospitals run two or more cohorts a year, timed around the spring and winter graduation seasons, so a program you missed in the fall may open again in the spring.

How long a round stays open

Shorter than most students expect. Our team confirms application dates on hospital pages before the Vibe Nursing app shows a program as open. Of the 33 rounds we confirmed this cycle with both an opening and a closing date, across 13 states, half were open for 10 days or less. 12 closed within a week, 21 within two weeks, and the longest stayed open 124 days. Some pages also say a round may close early once enough people apply.

Each round is counted once here, even when one health system uses the same dates for many programs. Counted program by program, the picture is the same: of 158 programs with a dated round, 99 gave applicants a week or less.

Applying for a 2027 start

If you graduate in 2027, the rounds that matter to you are for cohorts starting that year, and many of them open in the months before you finish school. On Oct 29, 2026, 636 of the 1,690 programs we track were taking applications, and when we last counted, 145 more showed as opening soon. Many programs set a date by which you must be licensed, so plan your NCLEX date alongside your applications; some states let you work under a permit before you pass (see which).

Why dates are hard to follow

Dates live on hundreds of separate career pages. They change from year to year, are often posted with little notice, and some hospitals post a round only on their job board, not on their residency page. Checking all of that by hand during your last semester is a job of its own.

How not to miss one

  1. A few months before you graduate, list the states you can work in and the units you want.
  2. Find the programs that hire new grads in those places and note how each one announces its rounds.
  3. Have your resume, references, transcript and a cover letter draft ready before anything opens, so you can apply on day one.
  4. Watch the programs you want. The Vibe Nursing app checks them and sends an alert the day a round opens.

Questions

Do nurse residency programs open at the same time every year?

Often in similar months, but not on the same dates. Hospitals move rounds, add cohorts or skip one, so check each year instead of relying on last year's dates.

Can I apply before I pass the NCLEX?

Many programs accept applications from students in their final semester and set a date by which you must be licensed. Each program states its own rule.

What does rolling admission mean for a residency?

The program accepts applications until it fills instead of during a fixed window. On the day we last counted, 73 programs on our list were taking applications on a rolling basis.
