New grad med-surg residencies
Medical-surgical units hire more new graduates than any other area, and most residencies include med-surg spots. It is a strong first year: you learn to manage several patients with many different conditions at once.
Why it is a good first unit
- Med-surg builds the skills every other unit asks about: assessment, prioritization, time management and working with many disciplines.
- Telemetry and stepdown units are often part of the same residency, and they are a common path toward critical care later.
How to stand out
- Interviews focus on safety and time management. Have a clinical example ready for each, told as situation, action and result.
- Apply to several med-surg programs. They have the most spots, and one offer is all you need.
